About Course
Study with Katya Dennison and learn to create a confident drawing with visual expression.
3 Thursdays August 6, 13, and 20
In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of portrait drawing from the initial block-in
stage to creating a final developed image. Katya will walk through the principles of
beginning a portrait, followed by basic form rendering. This course focuses on anatomy, structure,
likeness, and precision of materials to create a confident drawing with visual expression.

Week 2:Â Specificity & Massing-In Shapes
Week 3:Â Rendering & Aesthetic Additions
Materials:
Strathmore 400 series Drawing Paper, smallest 9”x12” or largest 18”x24”
4H, 2H, H, HB pencils (Staedler brand recommended)
Kneaded eraser
Tombow mono zero eraser, round tip (highly recommended)
(Staedler) Sandpaper lead pointer pad
X-acto knife
Soft brush
Blending stump
Katya Dennison:
Kathryn “Katya” Dennison (b. 2002) is a traditional oil painter and drawer, who focuses on combining academic training with
graphic aesthetics. She received a BFA from the University of Pennsylvania, in coordination with the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2023. Residing in Queens, NYC, Katya is currently studying at Grand
Central Atelier.
Important Information
The doors to our events open 15 minutes before each session. If you arrive before then, there is no room to wait inside the building, so please plan accordingly. The doorman will direct you to the classroom.
This event occurs on the third floor of a building without an elevator. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the monitor.
There is no photography when the model is posing.
We kindly ask that ticket rescheduling be requested at least 48 hours before class. Space is limited, and we hold spots for all ticket holders.
